The Arus Kualan Traditional School is a non-formal education institution that was established under the Arus Kualan Foundation in 2014. The foundation is committed to providing education and passing on local wisdom knowledge of the indigenous Dayak community to the younger generation, protecting the environment, and conducting literacy movements. With four branches located in different villages within the Simpang Hulu sub-district, the school has a total of 138 students as of 2022.
The Arus Kualan Foundation has a strong focus on education and passing on the local wisdom of the Dayak community to the younger generation. The foundation believes that preserving and promoting the local wisdom of the indigenous community is essential for preserving their identity and cultural heritage. Through their non-formal education programs, the foundation aims to provide an opportunity for students to learn about their cultural roots and traditional practices, such as traditional dances, music, and handicrafts.
In addition to promoting local wisdom, the Arus Kualan Foundation is also committed to protecting the environment. The Dayak community has a long-standing tradition of living in harmony with nature, and the foundation aims to preserve this relationship by educating students about the importance of environmental conservation. The foundation conducts campaigns related to environmental issues and Indigenous Peoples through social media, documentaries, and writings.
Moreover, the foundation conducts literacy movements that focus on promoting reading and writing skills among the Dayak community. The literacy movements aim to improve the literacy rates among students and help them develop the skills needed to participate fully in society.
To create a place for the new generation who live in the era of modernization to learn about the traditional knowledge, local wisdom and suitable place to connect them to the elders who still have the traditional knowledge.
The Arus Kualan Traditional School and the Arus Kualan Foundation serve as a shining example of how non-formal education can play a vital role in preserving local wisdom and promoting environmental conservation. By providing students with the opportunity to learn about their cultural heritage and the environment, the foundation is helping to create a brighter future for the indigenous Dayak community.
